DK Cabinets (Acton, CA)

2013 Wood Diamond Award

Category – Bookcase Face Frame Under $25K

Project Description – The cabinet parts were milled using a CNC and assembled in the shop.  A total of 17 cabinets were constructed  to complete this project including four bench seat storage cabinets, seven upper book cases which included two mitered cabinets, 4 base storage cabinets and 2 angled base cabinets.
The entire project was installed on 4 walls.  The room itself was a “U” shaped room with both the left and right walls angling into the back wall, center wall creating a total of 5 walls for this room.  The back wall was not furnished with cabinetry.

Unusual Aspects – There are a few outstanding features in this project.  The goal of the client was to organize and increase storage for their active child. We achieved this by taking advantage of usable dead space in the end corner of the base cabinets.  We were able to create a hidden storage area behind the end panel on this cabinet and secure it with a hidden locking system.  Additionally, every bench seat has storage under the lid and the lids are equipped with soft-close lid stays from Hafele.

Why I like the CMA – As a member of the CMA, my business  has benefited in several ways.  When I joined the CMA in Las Vegas about 6 years ago I was just a cabinet maker getting started in the business.  The CMA, through its leadership, seminars, roundtable events and its members provided strong support, advice and even direction.  Talking with seasoned, successful members whether at these events or through the use of the CMA forum, has provided me with volumes of helpful information.  As a one man shop, I have gained a confidence in running my business and dealing with my clients that I may not have found on my own.  Knowing that I have the support and backing of several hundred members willing to share their knowledge and advise is invaluable.
As the CMA grows and the corporate membership expands so does its stature in the industry as a whole.  Being recognized as a member of this association by my suppliers has had nothing but positive results.
