Project Description – I helped the customer design her kitchen, and advised and helped her husband throughout the restructuring of the home to fit the new kitchen.
I built the cabinets to fit her sloping ceiling, which made for a beautiful layout in this log cabin.
There was a house fire after they tore out the kitchen, but they caught it early and there was little damage. However, they have to do more remodeling now that the kitchen is finished. It did slow down the project some.
Inserting the logs was an interesting task. We had to cut two angles for the ceiling to get them to sit flush against it, and then we inserted them into each end of the walls. They were heavy for 2 of us lifting over our heads on ladders. Peeling them was the easy part.
The homeowner underestimated how long it would take them, so after I had finished the cabinets, I had to store them in my busy workshop for an extra 4 months. At one point I had 2 kitchens and 2 other projects in there together. It was a relief to get them safely installed.
I used my Grizzly planer, jointer, table saw, and shaper, my Porter Cable router, De Walt sanders, drills, and chop saw.
Unusual Aspects – I think the beautiful blues and grays in the grain, contrasting with the white of the maple is my favorite characteristic. I like it blended with the real antlers. I also really like the levels of the cabinets with the sloped ceiling.
Why I like the CMA – We are so happy to have become members of CMA. We are hoping to begin attending trainings and other events in the next couple years. Winning the award last year gave us wonderful publicity. We even got a front page story and photos on the business section of one of the big Sunday papers in Wyoming because of your press release. Thank you so much!
