Briefly describe your business and the type of products manufactured.
I design, construct, finish and install custom cabinetry. All cabinetry is constructed with plywood and solid hardwoods. The type of cabinetry includes: kitchens, vanities, bars, entertainment centers, bookcases and other furniture
What materials/species were used in this project/item?
The unit is constructed from cherry plywood and solid cherry.
Describe, in detail, the project/item’s construction.
The concept of this project was to provide a decorative cabinet used for entertaining/serving – that would blend with the decor of the home. The space was a recessed area in front of the sunken living room. The area behind the wall is the kitchen. The unit was to look as if the top – granite – was 6″ thick. We designed the unit so the granite could be laminated around the cabinetry and support the weight between the two outer pedestals.
The some of the shop equipment used on this project: Delta Platinum table saw, Bosch 10″ sliding miter saw, and a line boring machine.
I use a Delta 10″ Platinum table saw with a beismere fence, Makita 12″ finish planer, Bosch 10″ sliding compound miter saw, Kreg pocket boring machine for the face frames, hinge and line boring machines. All project where fabricated in the shop with the drawings I did on KCD.
What is the most unusual aspect or outstanding characteristic of this entry?
At nearly 12′ wide, the striking simplicity of the lines that add to the decor of the wall and space. The appearance that the 6″ granite top bridges the storage cabinet with the decorative pedestal bases. We had to figure out how to build the support for the top, even on the pedestals, so that the granite was flush with the cabinetry.
List any items that were outsourced (not produced by you or your shop).
The granite top was fabricated by Jon Orman. We had to assemble the cabinet in Jon’s shop so the granite could be fabricated to fit exactly. The edges of the top where mitered together to give the solid thick look.
