2014 Wood Diamond Award

Main Category: Bath
Sub Category: European
Dollar Amount: Under $25,000

Briefly describe your business and the type of products manufactured.
Rivendell Woodworks, Inc. is a custom cabinet and millwork manufacturer, specializing in high-end residential cabinetry. We follow through with design, computer layouts, construction and installation of our work to ensure the highest quality end product for the discerning client.

What materials/species were used in this project/item?
All exteriors, including doors, drawer fronts, end panels, scribe fillers and toekick skins, are slab walnut veneered over NAUF-MDF with grain-match across adjacent panels wherever possible. All interiors are Columbia PureBond clear acrylic finished maple plywood.

Describe, in detail, the project/item’s construction.
This was one of the first projects we laid out in our Microvellum AutoCad program specifically to have cut out on our new Weeke CNC router, bringing a new level of speed, efficiency and most especially accuracy to our production process. This was especially helpful with odd angles where some cabinets met the wall, and where the in-wall medicine cabinets had to center over sinks while clearing studs that were in the way.

What is the most unusual aspect or outstanding characteristic of this entry?
The client was seeking a very modern, sleek look, with grain-matched walnut veneers, tight clearances and clean, crisp corners. The cabinetry hugged odd angles in some locations for a fully integrated, built-in look.

List any items that were outsourced (not produced by you or your shop).
Clear conversion varnish finish (by Cabinet Coats of Concord CA) and finished countertops were by others. We at Rivendell refined the preliminary designer’s plans into working computer layouts, cut out and built all casework carcases, doors and drawer fronts, as well as installed all of our work.

Please offer a brief explanation of how being a member of the CMA has benefited you and/or your business.
