Rivendell Woodworks (Concord, CA)

2014 Wood Diamond Award

Main Category: Library
Sub Category: Creative Solution
Dollar Amount: Over $25,000

Briefly describe your business and the type of products manufactured.
Rivendell Woodworks, Inc. is a custom cabinet and millwork manufacturer, specializing in high-end residential cabinetry. We follow through with design, computer layouts, construction and installation of our work to ensure the highest quality end product for the discerning client.

What materials/species were used in this project/item?
All doors, decorative trims and columns are frame-and-panel (both raised and recessed) with applied mouldings, from Dutchman Doors. All cabinet exteriors are paint grade maple. All interiors (carcases) are built from Columbia PureBond clear acrylic finished maple plywood. Bases, trims and crowns are custom made to match existing woodwork.

Describe, in detail, the project/item’s construction.
This was one of the first projects we laid out in our Microvellum AutoCad program specifically to have cut out on our new Weeke CNC router, bringing a new level of speed, efficiency and most especially accuracy to our production process.

What is the most unusual aspect or outstanding characteristic of this entry?
Of special note was getting the angles of cabinet tops and ceiling trim to meet the angle of the ceiling tightly, and to design the cabinetry so that it could be built complete in shop to be disassembled for shop finish and transport to the job site, where it was reassembled to present a seamless finished product. Also of note was the hidden metal bar reinforcement needed to keep the very wide (over 5 feet) adjustable shelves rigid.

List any items that were outsourced (not produced by you or your shop).
Solid color opaque conversion varnish finish was by others (Cabinet Coats, Concord CA). Cabinet doors (noted above) were by Dutchman Doors (Tracy CA). Mouldings not produced in shop were outsourced to the Moulding Company (Concord CA) and Beronio Lumber (San Francisco). Door pulls were also by others. Rivendell did all of the installation.

Please offer a brief explanation of how being a member of the CMA has benefited you and/or your business.
The opportunity to meet with and share experiences and insights with other members, at occasional regional meetings as well as at the annual fairs, plus through the member forums and webinars, is extremely valuable. We are all a collection of like-minded professionals keyed on the mutual goal of becoming better woodworkers and successful businesspeople.
