Castleman Carpentry (Berryville, VA)

2015 Wood Diamond Award

Main Category: Kitchen
Sub Category: Best Overall
Dollar Amount: Over $25,000

What materials/species were used in this project/item?
This beautiful kitchen was fabricated from both solid Cherry and Maple hardwood. The Cherry cabinetry was finished in a warm Antique Cherry finish with Vandyke glaze while the island & range hood were finished with a Black Dye and Cinnamon Glaze. We constructed our cabinet boxes from 3/4″ Maple Plywood which we purchase prefinished from Hardwoods, Inc. in Frederick MD. At exposed cabinet surfaces we utilize 3/4″. All face frames, drawers, moldings and shelves were fabricated from solid 4/4″ Cherry or Maple in our shop. We used Blumotion undermount full extension drawer slides and Blum European Compact hinges with Blumotion. We installed a variety of Rev-a-Shelf cabinet inserts from pullout spice racks, trash bins & pot racks to tilt trays as well as custom fabricated drawer inserts, charging station & pullouts to meet the homeowners specific needs.

Describe, in details, the project/item’s construction.
All cabinetry & millwork was fabricated in our shop in Berryville VA. We fabricate our doors utilizing two 3-HP spindle shapers as well as a 1.5-HP spindle shaper for coping and joints. We cut panels and lumber to size on a Shop Fox 5-HP 12″ cabinet saw. We mill our own trim on a Shop Fox 7″ Mini-Moulder. Our face frames are constructed with pocket hole joinery which we mill on a Kreg-Forman pocket hole machine and assemble on a Kreg clamp table. Sanding is accomplished utilizing a 24″ double drum sander, 6″ oscillating edge sander, curves are sanded on a 1.5-HP oscillating spindle sander. We also utilize Festool – Random orbit sanders with Festool dust extractors for final sanding. Finishing is accomplished in our on-site, dedicated finishing room. Stains & Glazes are hand applied. Tonor coats as well as top coats are applied using Turbinaire HVLP equipment. All parts are hand buffed before assembly.

What is the most unusual aspect or outstanding characteristic of this entry?
This large kitchen had a great deal of floor space, however, an awkward layout due to all the angles and openings. We designed and fabricated this kitchen cabinetry with inspiration from our homeowners who wanted a quality traditional kitchen that maximized storage. Dealing with all the angles, flanking the refrigerator with cabinetry, wrapping the cabinetry around the corner to the kitchen workspace & maintaining a large center island that was two tiered to provide the kitchen sink some privacy from the adjacent eat in area were all challenges that we satisfied in this design. The furniture styling utilizing multiple finishes, corbels, mantels & varying heights all added to the traditional beauty of this space. We maximized all storage areas in this kitchen to include storage behind side panels for items such as BBQ equipment, narrow depth storage & knives on a magnetic bar. Additional led lighting was incorporated not only below the cabinets & inside the glass front cabinetry but also above the cabinets that did not extend to the ceiling. This provide excellent ambiance lighting for entertaining.
