Briefly describe your business and the type of products manufactured.
We are a one-man shop located in Southern California and specialize in custom, residential cabinetry. We manufacture and install kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers, closets and custom built-ins.
What materials/species were used in this project/item?
For this entertainment center, we used Alder plywood with solid Alder faceframes and components.
Describe, in detail, the project/item's construction
This entertainment center was a custom, face frame unit built to fit into a 12 foot long by 10 foot high niche in the client's family room. The client wanted a custom, stain, glazed and distressed finish to match the fireplace mantel that we did previously for them.
The unit was composed of six base cabinets which supported the upper shelving unit. The shelving unit was designed around the client's 60" flat screen TV. The ends of the upper and lower units were adorned with custom made, fluted trim and plinths.
The top of the unit was capped with a 12 foot long, crown mantel. This was constructed and installed as one piece.
What is the most unusual aspect or outstanding characteristic of this entry?
One of the outstanding characteristics of this project was the finish. The finish was done in -house and consisted of a water-borne stain, glaze and top coat. To ensure consistency on all parts, every individual part was stained, glazed and top coated prior to assembly. The finish also include a moderate degree of distressing which added to the character and complexity of this project.
Another great characteristic of this project was the lighting. The tall shelving units were lit by LED light strips installed behind the vertical stiles. The upper cubby units were lit by recessed LED puck lights. All the lights are controlled by a proximity/touch dimmer - on/off switch which was inconspicuously installed in the shelving unit.
How has being a member of the CMA benefited you and/or your business?
As a one-man shop, I have found the resources that the CMA provides to be an extremely valuable asset to my business. I have attended many CMA functions and teaching sessions where I have been able to network with numerous other CMA members, many of whom are one-man shops as I am. The knowledge and insights I have been able to glean from these friendships has improved both my business knowledge and cabinet making skills.
Joining the CMA was the best business decision I have made and I am proud to be a member.
List any items that were outsourced.
The only outsourced items in this project were the drawers and doors purchased from Decore-Ative Specialities. All hardware was Blum from Wurth Louis & Co. The lighting was from Hafele.
