Mancave Wine Cellar
We had a lot of fun on this project. The client had two passions that he wanted to celebrate in his mancave: his guitars and his wine collection! The general contractor did a nice job of planking most of the basement with rustic cedar, so the client could display his guitars there. We discussed the best hardwood to complement that cedar in the wine cellar, and came up with the hickory you see here. Frank Wardley of Pitman & Wardley Architects provided architectural drawings for the cellar, so we had a good starting point for our design work. What makes this wine cellar unusual is the detailing. Instead of robotically trying to jam the maximum number of bottles into the space, the racks are punctuated with some larger openings that will fit boxed cases, magnums, even a decanter pitcher. Utilizing a random diamond pattern on both sides, then having that pattern jump onto the glass door muntins, transforms the design from serious to frivolous. If I were to guess, I’d say the owner and architect may have opened a bottle before doing any sketches! In the first picture you see the owners wine log on the counter. In the head-on shot you can see he has tagged each type of wine with a “best date to drink” label. Looks like he fully intends to appreciate this little cellar in the decades to come!
